The Safe Choice That Isn't

Is it risky to buy plastic parts from India? The trade data says the bigger risk is standing still.

For twenty years, China was the safe choice. If you bought plastic parts there, nobody asked you to explain yourself. The suppliers were proven, the prices were known, and if something went wrong, everyone else had the same problem.

Safe choices have a way of turning into habits. And a habit is hardest to see at the exact moment it stops making sense.

The line nobody was watching

Between 2019 and 2025, American imports from China fell by $140 billion. Imports from India rose 79%, past $100 billion for the first time.

If the trend of those six years holds, India passes $130 billion by 2029 while China slips toward $230 billion. China is still far bigger, but big shifts rarely begin with the leader losing. They begin with the gap closing, and this gap is closing fast.

Dollars spent in China for every $1 spent in India

In 2019, for every $1 American buyers spent in India, they spent $8 in China. By 2025, it was $3.

The most careful buyer moved first

Apple does not gamble with its supply chain. In 2025, it said most iPhones sold in the US were made in India. In a single year, India's share of the smartphones shipped to America went from 14% to 44%.

When the most careful buyer in the world changes its mind, it changes what “safe” means for everyone else.

The rules moved too

On every $100,000 of plastic parts, an American buyer now pays about $10,000 less duty on Indian parts than on Chinese ones, and $2,500 less than on Vietnamese.

India's rate applies under the UK–India trade agreement with a preferential certificate of origin. Countries with their own UK trade deals, such as Vietnam, Japan and South Korea, also pay reduced or zero rates. Rates checked October 2026.

In Britain the gap is simpler still: nothing from India, 6% from China.

Europe is on the same road

Europe's imports from India have more than doubled since 2020, to €69.5 billion. At the pace of the last six years, they pass €100 billion a year by 2029, before the trade agreement adds anything. Germany's imports from India nearly doubled between 2015 and 2022 alone.

Plastics are already there

When it comes to plastics, the biggest customer is already American. One in five dollars of India's plastics exports goes to the US, more than the next three markets combined.

So where is the risk?

Here is the uncomfortable part. The risk most buyers worry about, trying a new country, is easy to see. The risk they don't see is the cost of arriving late.

Qualifying a supplier takes months: tooling, samples, approval. Buyers who start now will have Indian supply running before the next tariff change. Buyers who wait will be qualifying while their competitors are already buying.

The safe choice used to be the familiar one. Now it's having more than one.
